The Bloomberg website says of the project:
For Comma 38, artist and publisher Arnaud Desjardin will exhibit new, old, rare, and popular books while running an active printing press in Bloomberg Space. His COMMA commission, part of an ongoing project titled The Book on Books on Artists' Books, is intended to create an active and participatory review of current and historical practice. This exhibition is about both the display of books on artists' books and the production of a book about the books displayed. He intends to print a first edition, a book of books, a critical anthology and source book, alongside which a large range of books on artists' books will be displayed in a series of vitrines.
Artists' books have normally been sold and distributed through small networks of bookshops and galleries that often produce lists of available titles in printed form. The advent of the Internet has meant that information online has changed the nature of this documentary evidence. Desjardin's unique and extraordinary combination of display and production makes an exhibition that actively engages in both the making and disseminating in real time. The books themselves become both vehicles for information and documents that testify for artistic activity in its own right

This survey of experimental art and design magazines published since 2000 explores the various ways in which contemporary artists and designers utilize the magazine format as an experimental space for the presentation of artworks and text. Throughout the 20th century, international avant-garde activities in the visual arts and design were often codified first in the informal context of a magazine or journal. This exhibition, drawn from the holdings of the MoMA Library, follows the practice into the 21st century. The works on view represent a broad array of international titles within this genre, from community-building newspapers to image-only photography magazines to conceptual design projects. The contents illustrate a diverse range of image-making, editing, design, printing, and distribution practices. There are obvious connections to the past lineage of artists’ magazines and little architecture and design magazines of the 20th century, as well as a clear sense of the application of new techniques of image-editing and printing methods. Assembled together, these contemporary magazines provide a first-hand view into these practices and represents the MoMA Library’s sustained effort to document and collect this medium.

Ink used for digital printing is one of the most precious substances in the world. A single gallon of ink costs over four thousand dollars and this is one reason why digitally printed books are so expensive.
However, the price of a book is not calculated according to the amount of ink used in its production. For example, a Lulu book of blank pages costs an artist as much to produce as a book filled with text or large photographs. Furthermore, as the number of pages increases, the price of each page decreases. A book containing the maximum number of pages printed entirely in black ink therefore results in the lowest cost and maximum value for the artist.

Bast Fooks was one of my new years resolutions for 2016. I haven’t given up smoking yet, but I did end up spending my new years eve in, printing and sewing the first Bast Fook issue. There and then I had decided that it would be a project in 12 parts and that I would produce a book for each month of 2016. Each Bast Fook is a repository of ideas (in the form of notes, thoughts, readings and misreadings, assumptions, aphorisms, contemplations, stories, lists, observations and lost projects). Bast Fooks have evolved into a platform through which, I can organise - in a pretty disorganised way-ideas as they happen and material produced in different ways, under different circumstances, at different places and times and sometimes by totally different versions of myself. Bast Fook is an anagram of Fast Book and in a way each issue is offering a slow consumption of a fastness that often reads a lot like a facebook newsfeed, decentered, fragmented, multivoiced.

This book was published in conjunction with Foerster’s on-site installation in a vacant lot in Miami [May, 17, 2012], put on by the New York gallery Shoot the Lobster. A conversation between Foerster and the show’s curator, Bob Nickas, is included in the book and offers insight into the artist’s process and experience with the project. The show emphasized the placement of printing plates and photographic paper in the lot and their interaction with the environment. This is highlighted by the photographs featured in the book, which document objects from the show, as well as its visitors and surroundings.

The Bermuda Love-Triangle, from 1988, is Tom Grothus's most elaborate production. The printing is all offset-lithography on quality stock. The black, red, and yellow cover includes some spot varnish highlights. The 24 leaves inside are printed in blue and black ink, for 48 pages of content. Interspersed among the pen-and-ink drawings are several beautiful duotones of pencil and ball-point-pen drawings. Some of the images in this book are like those of a dream that haunts you with an elusive meaning. The common literary thread throughout is a list of various proposed freedoms, such as the "Freedom to Obey Puppets." These may fill in some of the gaps left in the U.S. Constitution by that nation's founding fathers. Editor's Note: Gripping, lovely, haunted, serene, and impeccably surreal, this book of gentle hallucinations defies categorization. You might call them cartoons, but they will make you laugh silently for weeks. This is one of the nicest books we have ever held.

The mid-1960s witnessed a boom in underground and selfpublished works. Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, lowcost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, »messianic amateurs« combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic
strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expression in the name of a new »sensibility«.
This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the internationalcontext in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in »independent publishing«, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

"Nowadays the alphabet, like other cultural paradigms and communication evolutions, hosts a new series of menaings. The digital era, despite it being liked by some and not by others, has arrived and not only that, but is there to stay. The following document tries to be an object of reflection, and the same time, a file for the posterity, as this precise digital era raises doubts about the sustainability of our culture over time that is to come, and the intangibility of it. With this document we capture the past in order to project it into the future. Based on a series of temporary parameters (pictures uploaded in the last 24 hours) and a format (black and white photography, medium size) we extract the following pictures to create the photographic alphabet of Google Images. This confirms the initial concept; the documentation which is exhibited here never again belonged to the momentary alphabet on the 3th of December in the present year, so we manage to capture the present (already the past as you read these precise words) and we leave it physically alive in the future, making the common belief of printing as old fashioned and didgital as actual lose its sense, finding the way to make contemporary, in other words, tangible or visible today, something which doesn't exist on the web anymore."

1. Auflage. Geprägt von Spontaneität und Subversion definiert das STEIDL-WERK No.30: KUNSTHAUS GÖTTINGEN die Tradition des Offsetdrucks neu. Jedes Buch dieser limitierten Auflage ist mit einer anderen Farbpalette ausgestattet und somit ein Unikat. Die Publikation ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen Theseus Chan, Gerhard Steidl und dem Kunsthaus Göttingen, wo Chan im Rahmen der documenta 15 WERK No.30 in "printing futures" zeigte. Die Installation, die er täglich ergänzte, war Chans Liebesbrief an das Gedruckte in all seinen Formen (von Papierbögen und Druckplatten bis hin zu recycelten Verpackungen), und das Buch ist sowohl die Dokumentation als auch das letzte Stück dieser Arbeit. Chan und Steidl griffen das Manifest von WERK No.30 auf - "etablierte Denkweisen, Techniken und Verfahren durch Sabotage von Maschinen und menschlichen Eingriffen zu stören" - und setzten es in Buchform um, indem sie das, was sie "Reverse Engineering" nennen, die Druckprozesse dekonstruierten, um die Ergebnisse zu verbessern. Sie setzten auf Intuition und Zufall, indem sie normalerweise weggeworfene Testbögen zum Binden verwendeten, das Wasser an der Druckmaschine abstellten, um unvorhersehbare Farbmuster zu erzeugen, und Standard-CMYK-Farben gegen fluoreszierende Varianten austauschten. Das Ergebnis ist eine "gedruckte Anarchie" und nicht weniger als eine völlig neue Form von Buch.

Das Heft besteht ins Englische übersetzte Essay "How to Prepare Yourself for the Collapse of the Industrial Publishing System" des argentinischen Künstlers Eric Schierloh. Der Text wurde zusammen mit Paul Holzman übersetzt.
This publication is the result of a warm exchange between Public Collectors and Eric Schierloh of the press Barba de Abejas, (Beard of Bees).
In 2020 Eric wrote this essay that he translated into English with an American friend, Paul Paul Holzman, who also lives in Buenos Aires. In December 2021, Eric reached out to me to share his enthusiasm for my text “Towards a Self Sustaining Publishing Model.” Eric proposed making a Spanish translation and publishing my writing as a cheap edition in Argentina. He felt my text had similarities to his own words; the two works share a similar spirit of encouraging publishing experimentation outside of typically limiting market constraints.
Though Eric’s text had already been published in English in World Literature Today magazine and translated into French by the cardboard press La Liebre Dorada, we agreed that it could still be worthwhile to make a US edition that stood alone. So, in a celebration of artist publishing exchanges, Public Collectors is happy to share Eric Schierloh’s inspiring writing. It provides many potential creative paths forward for people with access to any form of printing, and any materials that could be used to make a book.
