OFF-Biennale Budapest is a series of exhibitions and art events in and beyond the city of Budapest. Its concept is different from traditional biennials as we know them. Not affiliated with any institution, it is a voluntary collaborative initiative of artists, groups of artists, curators, art managers, gallerists and collectors. OFF-Biennale Budapest is a civil initiative, whose aim is to bring a segment of culture, contemporary art, closer to the public at large. OFF proclaims the importance of independent thinking and action, breaking away from clichés and habitual routines. It is meant to demonstrate that contemporary art can foster and catalyse this kind of activity – in other words, that contemporary art is much more than mere luxury and a source of aesthetic pleasure.

STEPPING OUT! Female Identities in Chinese Contemporary Art ist seit 25 Jahren die erste Ausstellung, die einen umfassenden Überblick über die Produktion chinesischer Künstlerinnen der Gegenwart gibt. Mit offener und mitunter provozierender Haltung treten sie seit den späten 1980er-Jahren aus dem Schatten ihrer die chinesische Gegenwartskunst bisher dominierenden männlichen Kollegen heraus. Im Spannungsfeld zwischen machtvoller Tradition, parteipolitischer Ideologie und wirtschaftlichem Umbruch untersuchen und dokumentieren 26 ausgewählte Künstlerinnen individuelle und gesellschaftliche Ängste, Widersprüche und Hoffnungen und legen diese oft schonungslos offen.
In der repräsentativen Auswahl finden sich sowohl Pionierinnen als auch junge, hierzulande kaum bekannte Positionen. Ziel des Ausstellungs- und Publikationsprojektes ist es, das eklatante Ungleichgewicht in der Sichtbarkeit weiblicher Künstlerinnen aus China zu korrigieren und auf die enorme Vielfalt und Relevanz ihres künstlerischen Schaffens zu verweisen.

‘Curated by Weekly’ is a digital art project. It aims to raise questions regarding online formats, web-based distribution and the acceleration of digital platforms in contemporary art. The project is made up of a website and a magazine, which will be released in irregular intervals. The latter will include essays and interventions about digital exhibition formats, the experiences of digital curation and the questions about media and matter in the post-analogue space. Every week, an artwork will be “curated” and published on the website. In cooperation with different individuals, institutions and independent projects from the art field, artistic positions and works will be displayed. They can function as pieces of art in the digital sphere as well as be critical about it, or to contrast itself with the functions of the web. The project’s pace and composition orientates itself around the relevant visual environment of the present day.
The format of the website is consciously purely visual, while complementary content will be published in the magazine. This content will consist of essays and contributions around certain questions. For example: How new formats will be established in contemporary art, which technological tools are required or how curation is practiced in a digital space. What should particularly be highlighted is determining which artistic media, surfaces and materialities provide an adequate digital environment.
'Curated by Weekly' aims for an experimental format, which uses the speed and the possibilities of the digital space, but instead of reproductions and documentations we want to show artistic work itself, to address availability in the digital space and to use catchy visual surfaces. At the same time, the discourse and the self-reflection of the format is discussed in the appearing magazines/readers online and offline.

Der 1985 in Hamburg geborene Künstler Julian Turner ist der zweite Preisträger des Kapsch Contemporary Art Prize, einer Auszeichnung zur Förderung junger Künstler_innen mit Lebensmittelpunkt in Österreich, die erstmals 2016 von der Kapsch Group gemeinsam mit dem mumok ausgelobt wurde. „Geplante Imperfektion“ durchdringt die multimedialen Arbeiten Turners, in denen er Konventionen des Kunstbetriebes zitiert und humorvoll infrage stellt. Mit seiner Bar du Bois – einem Hybrid aus Ausstellungsraum, funktioneller Bar und kollaborativem Kunstprojekt – hat der Künstler ein sich immer weiter entwickelndes Format kreiert, das eine soziale Unterwanderung des Ausstellungsraums unternimmt.
Für seine erste museale Einzelausstellung warum nicht beschäftigt sich Turner mit dem Begriff des Displays, musealen und nicht musealen Präsentationsformen, sowie mit unterschiedlichsten Sammlungsprozessen: Wie sammeln wir, was sammeln wir und warum sammeln wir? Oder warum eigentlich nicht? Wie stellen wir eben jene Sammlungen aus? Oder warum nicht? Die unsichtbare Imperfektion steht im Mittelpunkt. Der Prozess wird zum ausgestellten Objekt.

Inspired by the marks left behind by a cicada walking across his sketchbook, contemporary artist Zhu Yingchun placed boards and "ink ponds" of dark-coloured vegetable juices in his garden for the bugs to crawl through. The resulting marks, were thousands of twisted characters, each with a charm of its own - the language of the bugs. Wir werden Zeuge von Kallinikous peripatetischer Reise und seinen Bemühungen, die Verstecke zu finden und zu fotografieren, die von der EOKA-Guerilla während des nationalen Befreiungskampfes von 1955 bis 1959 gegen die britische Herrschaft gebaut und genutzt wurden. Der Wald als heiliger Ort wird zu dem Raum, in dem Kallinikou, der sich auf ursprünglichen Pfaden bewegt, über die wahre Natur der Dinge nachdenkt.

Legible-Visible. Between the Film Frame and the Page explores the relationship between print publications and audio-visual documents, two of the most important media underpinning the social and cultural landscape of our time which also define the evolution of contemporary art in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The emergence of relatively inexpensive home video technologies in the 1970s brought with it an alternative model for the creation and diffusion of artist publications, and a prolific period of exploration, reflected in the work of Baldessari, Gilbert & George, Boltanski, Carrión, Rucha and Rosler, among others. The popularization of digital media at the beginning of the 21st century sparked a revolution in the systems of production of both audio-visuals and books, exemplified by a new generation of artists, such as McGeorge, Kentridge, Cine Quieto or Van Leijsen.
Mela Dávila proposes a theoretical and historical framework for works that the market long dismissed as secondary on account of their serial nature. This characteristic, together with the particular space of experience they generate, and the linearity and temporality common to both media, have opened up a range of new narrative (or anti-narrative) possibilities which have enabled artists to redefine contemporary art.
Starting from a detailed study of 24 double works, Maite Muñoz looks at how different artists have taken advantage of the permeability between publications and audio-visuals, in which ideas and strategies of narration and editing intrinsic to both mutually infect and enrich one another through the play of opposition, complementarity and dialectics.

Auf Einladung von pick nick wird "Observations (dialog and script)" vom 15.-18.03.2018 installiert, realisiert und von insitu vor Ort diskutiert.
Im Rahmen des öffentlichen Gesprächs "Observations (dialog)" initiiert insitu collective ein Gespräch mit pick nick über die roten Fäden der vergangenen Praktiken und Projekte der Gruppe, sowie über Gemeinsamkeiten und gemeinsame Erfahrungen in der kollektiven Arbeit.
Parallel dazu präsentiert "Observations (script)" gedruckte Handouts, die im Ausstellungsraum ausgestellt werden. Diese Kommentare, Schlüsselwörter und zusätzlichen Gedanken werden dem Publikum zusätzliche Ebenen des Begreifens bieten und neue mögliche Perspektiven auf die ausgestellten Projekte eröffnen.

Dabei steht nicht der „klassische“, perspektivisch angelegte Raum im Vordergrund, sondern der Raum als sensuelles Erlebnis, in dem das menschliche Dasein in all seinen Facetten zum Ausdruck kommt. Seine monumentalen Holzschnitte begreift er als präzise konstruierte „Räume ohne konkrete Inhalte“, die dem Betrachter ein Spektrum an sinnstiftenden, sinnlichen Erfahrungen ermöglichen und so das eigene Menschsein vergegenwärtigen. Entsprechend versteht Werthmann seine Holzschnitte weniger als Bilder, denn als Installationen, die einen genuinen Erlebnisraum konstituieren, in den der Betrachter immer tiefer hineingezogen wird.
Werthmanns aktuelle Werkserie SILENCE verkörpert diesen Anspruch geradezu paradigmatisch. Sich der Sogwirkung dieser gewaltigen, polychromen Holzschnitte zu entziehen, erscheint nahezu unmöglich. Das minutiös organisierte Wechselspiel zwischen Farbe und Form lässt den vermeintlichen Bildgegenstand oder das Bildgeschehen fortwährend im Vagen. Vielmehr formiert sich im permanenten Lauf der eigenen Assoziationsketten alles immerzu neu. Vermeintlich Erkanntes zerfällt bereits im nächsten Augenblick, um sogleich in einer neuen Form und einem neuen Sinnzusammenhang aufzugehen: Landschaften werden zu Objektträgern mit Zellproben, aus ornamentalen Strukturen entsteigen schemenhaft Figuren und Flüssiges erstarrt zu fester Materie.

Das Studio Vier5 beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit der Außendarstellung und dem Erscheinungsbild verschiedener Museen und Ausstellungen. Ein Schwerpunkt des Studios liegt in der Entwicklung und Erforschung zeitgemässer Typografie sowie deren Anwendung.
So entwickelten die Designer das Logo und das Erscheinungsbild für die Außendarstellung des Museums Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt,[3] Deutschland, wo sie 2005 auch eine Einzelausstellung hatten. Ebenso zeichnete das Büro für die Außendarstellung des Centre d’art contemporain de Brétigny (CAC Brétigny), Frankreich, verantwortlich. Von 2009 bis 2014 waren VIER5 Artist in Residence am CAC Brétigny.[4] Für die documenta 12 (2007) entwarfen VIER5 das Leitsystem (Schilder, Containerbeschriftungen, sowie einfach verständliche Informationen und Zeichen).[5] 2011 entwickelten sie das Erscheinungsbild sowie das Leitsystem für das 22E Festival International de l'Affiche et du Graphisme de Chaumont, Frankreich. Weiter waren sie verantwortlich für das Erscheinungsbild und Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum der Busan Biennale 2012, Südkorea. Von 2013 bis 2017 waren sie verantwortlich für das Erscheinungsbild des Johann Jacobs Museum in Zürich, Schweiz. 2014 wurden sie in das Designteam der documenta 14 berufen. Sie waren verantwortlich für den grafischen Gesamtauftritt der documenta 14 in Athen, Griechenland.[6] Im Jahr 2016 betreuten sie das Erscheinungsbild der Kunstbiennale Suzhou Documents in Suzhou, China[7].
Arbeiten von VIER5 befinden sich in verschiedenen internationalen Museumssammlungen, wie z. B. der Bibliothèque Nationale de France, dem Centre national des arts plastiques[8], dem Les Arts Décoratifs, dem Museum für Gestaltung in Zürich, dem documenta-Archiv in Kassel, der Neuen Sammlung in München.

Edition 09 in the ongoing Artist Music Journals series features the work of the Montreal based artists and musicians Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau, known as Seripop. Known for their original illustration and design work, as well as their longstanding tenure as founders and members of the musical outfit Aids Wolf, Seripop have a broad following around the globe. For their AMJ, Seripop compiled years of original gig poster work, the first collection of its kind for the studio, which has made thousands of prints over the years.
About Seripop: Yannick Desranleau and Chloe Lum are visual artists and musicians who started collaborating in 2002 under the nom de guerre Seripop. Based in Montreal, Seripop has earned international attention for its stylistically distinct, silkscreened street posters. In 2005, Lum and Desranleau began experimenting with sculptural print installations which merge notions of city politics and visual perception. The duo has been speaking and exhibiting their work at various art institutions including Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England, Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen, Scotland, and the University of North Texas, Denton, USA. In addition to Seripop, Lum and Desranleau play in AIDS Wolf, a noise-rock band and Hamborghinni, a drums and electronics project.

Er sieht sich als Weltbürger und Armenier zugleich, und seine Kunst gibt ihm die Möglichkeit, an einem internationalen Dialog teilzunehmen. Auf lokaler Ebene findet er sich inmitten der Bildung eines neuen Eisernen Vorhangs wieder. Er lehnt die Rückkehr Armeniens zur schwierigen Realität der Sowjetunion aus mehreren Gründen entschieden ab: das hohe Maß an Korruption in allen Bereichen der Regierung, der Mangel an zugewiesenen Ressourcen für die breite Öffentlichkeit und die unterdrückte Mentalität des Lebens im Allgemeinen. Vahagn verwendet als Hauptinstrumente Pinsel, Acrylfarbe und Leinwand. Er bedient sich auch eines Druckers, Bleistiften, Kohle, Aquarellfarben, Sprühdosen, Schablonen und armenischen Weins. "Wenn es um die emotionale Kommunikation mit der Welt geht, halte ich mich nicht zurück", sagt er. Eines seiner in Arbeit befindlichen Werke verkörpert die selbstgefällige Haltung gegenüber einer sich abzeichnenden Katastrophe. Es zeigt eine Atomexplosion über einem Strand, an dem Köpfe schweben und Eiscreme essen. In einem anderen Werk, The Visit of Big Brother, beherrscht ein russischer Flugzeugträger einen See, genauer gesagt den Sewansee, während nackte Menschen sich entspannen und das Flugzeug betrachten, aber nichts gegen die lauernde Gefahr unternehmen. Es ist nicht nur die Betrachtung von Problemen, die Vahagns künstlerische Investition dominiert; er glaubt auch an den Wert des menschlichen Lebens und daran, wie seine Schönheiten auf die Umgebung ausstrahlen. Er weist darauf hin, dass die nackten Menschen in seinen Gemälden der Szene ein Gefühl der Freude verleihen.
Vahagn unterstützt die freie Meinungsäußerung und ist der Meinung, dass nicht nur jeder Mensch, sondern auch jedes Lebewesen einen Raum zum Leben und Arbeiten verdient hat. Wasser zum Beispiel spielt im Alltag eine wichtige Rolle, und deshalb muss es eine Stimme haben. Da Vahagn jedoch die Freiheit des Denkens und der sozialen Ideen will, ist er gegen kulturelle Bewegungen, die kulturell wichtige Denkmäler vollständig opfern, um neue Strukturen zu errichten. Er ist der Meinung, dass damit der Vergangenheit ein Bärendienst erwiesen wird, egal wie erbaulich oder traumatisierend sie auch sein mag, denn dies ist eine Art von Vandalismus - legal oder illegal. So entwickelten die Designer das Logo und das Erscheinungsbild für die Außendarstellung des Museums Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt, Deutschland, wo sie 2005 auch eine Einzelausstellung hatten. Ebenso zeichnete das Büro für die Außendarstellung des Centre d’art contemporain de Brétigny (CAC Brétigny), Frankreich, verantwortlich. Von 2009 bis 2014 waren VIER5 Artist in Residence am CAC Brétigny. Für die documenta 12 (2007) entwarfen VIER5 das Leitsystem (Schilder, Containerbeschriftungen, sowie einfach verständliche Informationen und Zeichen). 2011 entwickelten sie das Erscheinungsbild sowie das Leitsystem für das 22E Festival International de l'Affiche et du Graphisme de Chaumont, Frankreich. Weiter waren sie verantwortlich für das Erscheinungsbild und Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum der Busan Biennale 2012, Südkorea. Von 2013 bis 2017 waren sie verantwortlich für das Erscheinungsbild des Johann Jacobs Museum in Zürich, Schweiz. 2014 wurden sie in das Designteam der documenta 14 berufen. Sie waren verantwortlich für den grafischen Gesamtauftritt der documenta 14 in Athen, Griechenland. Im Jahr 2016 betreuten sie das Erscheinungsbild der Kunstbiennale Suzhou Documents in Suzhou, China.
Arbeiten von VIER5 befinden sich in verschiedenen internationalen Museumssammlungen, wie z. B. der Bibliothèque Nationale de France, dem Centre national des arts plastiques[8], dem Les Arts Décoratifs, dem Museum für Gestaltung in Zürich, dem documenta-Archiv in Kassel, der Neuen Sammlung in München.
2021 hatte das Studio eine retrospektive Einzelausstellung seiner Arbeiten im Macro, Museum for contemporary art of Rome, Italien.
